Candlemass - The Door To Doom

There's a lot going on with this Candlemass LP, it marks the triumphant return of Johan Langquist and also sees the band somehow nabbing Tony Iommi as a guest. It features what is perhaps Candlemass's strongest lineup in 35 years as a band and hints at a very bright future for these doom metal veterans. Though the band have never really put out a bad record, The Door To Doom definitely is a cut above their recent work a testament to how talented the band is, and an absolute monster of a release that stands to any standard.

It's amazing to me to hear the raw talent in this band, not just in the vocals but also in the rich instrumental performances. The riffs have a well deserved sense of swagger and the band isn't afraid to dive into flashy solos. This is ab and who are completely aware of who they are and what they are delivering. Yes there are some silly and over the top moment,s but that's part of the fun. The sheer bombast and overwhelming madness of the band is what is going to draw you in and keep you fascinated. This is an authoritative and exciting doom metal record that speaks to all which makes the band special.

Full of deep emotion and grandiose imagery, Candlemass use The Door To Doom as a veritable tour de force. If you liked Candlemass before you are going to be deeply in love with this record. Hell, if you like any kind of slow and heavy music I think you are going to want to dig into this record. If only for the Tony Iommi guest spot on Astorolus - The Great Octopus which immediately caught my attention from my first semi-distracted listen to now, several spins in, completely addicted. This is a masterful album and one you won't soon forget.
