Un and Coltsblood are two of heaviest of the heavy, some of the ost punishing bands in the underground and acts who seem to understand the demented power of doom metal. This split between these two heavyweights stands to be one of the most impressive doom splits on record, up there with recent offerings including the one between Primitive Man and Unearthly Trance, or 2017's Fister/Chrch split. Splits like this one come to define a scene and show us what this music was all about in the first place.
What's interesting about this record is that though on paper Un and Coltsblood are both fairly similar bands, the deeper you delve the more it becomes clear that these guys are very pointed in their approach. It makes this split a fascinating journey between worlds, similar travelers perhaps, but taking far different journeys. You find yourself getting lost in the massive soundscapes and the crushing momentum. The overpowering might of Un and Coltsblood is otherworldly here and we get to see definitive proof both bands are expanding their sounds and pushing towards new horizons. It has been such an honor to watch both these bands grow as songwriters over the past few years and this is the icing on the cake.
I'm not going to blow smoke up your ass, this is a pair of twenty minute long tracks that are sometimes dense and require you to already be quite invested in the genre to properly 'get. They are for the dedicated fan, the people who love this music. It's not built around accessibility but rather raw emotion. Staring at the horror of existence and trying to come to terms with this world of shit that we must operate in. This is the transcendent beauty of what Un and Coltsblood are doing here and what keeps me coming back.
