Rotting Christ/Varathron - Duality Of The Unholy Existence

If you asked me for a list of dream splits, one between Rotting Christ and Varathron would be near the top of the list. These two artists, alongside groups like Necromantia really helped to spread the magic of Greek black metal around the world. Now that Hells Headbangers has them together for a split it's clear that this is a pair of bands who are not to be messed with. Instead we have two groups offering exclusive tracks that not only reflect where the artists are now, but which make sense in the overall context of their career.

Rotting Christ's contribution to the split, a track entitled, 'Spiritus Sancti' seems like it was written at the same time as the rest of their excellent 2019 record, The Heretics. It's bombastic and over the top, kicking in with a blazing riff and using the eerie synth padding to ensure that it remains a track that is wonderfully blasphemous in its bile spitting assault. Meanwhile, Varathrons contribution, 'Shaytan' is clearly a progression on the 2018, Patriarchs of evil record. What this split seems to stand as more of is just a statement that these bands can still come together even after thirty years of desecrating festival stages around the world.

It's hard to make a huge statement with just one song on a seven inch split. Still - Rotting Christ and Varathron seem eager to unveil their sort of inner torment here. Duality Of The Unholy Existence isn't just a masterful showing form two big names in black metal, it is a sort of document to the enduring power of the genre. Even after decades of drama, punishment and general slaughter, this is a split that makes sense and furthermore a split that is going to keep devout fans coming back for more year after year.
