Another day, another amazing release from Osmose Productions. The overwhelming magic of Patronymicon has once more coagulated into a full length. Eleven years into their career, Patronymicon has reached a bold new height. This latest offering, Ushered Forth By Cloven Tongue is masterfully delivered and continually hints at just how goddamn good this band is at their finest. It's a strong example of what more traditional leaning black metal can still deliver in 2019, when the genre has been bastardized beyond belief.
While it has been six long years since the last offering from Patronymicon, multiple listenings of Ushered Forth By Cloven Tongue suggest that it was well worth the wait. This is a record that seems to revel in the bleak magic of the songwriting and the wonderfully rich production. One particular standout on this record is the bass tone which adds an excellent sense of depth to tracks like Death Itself. Sure the overall approach might not be reinventing the wheel, but that's not really the point of a band like Patronymicon. Instead these guys are more just stoked to prove that they are among the greatest at this particular brand of searing hot black metal.
The sheer bombast delivered in these tracks is thrilling. Patronymicon seem to be enamored with the overarching power and glory of black metal. The bands sense of hard hitting sonic mayhem is delectable. Ushered Forth By Cloven Tongue captures the magic of second wave black metal and builds on it with modern production and excellent songwriting. There are a lot of black metal bands out there that try to be a twist in the myth, Patronymicon instead double down and forth us to embrace the mysteries of black metal as they were intended.
