Witch Vomit - Buried Deep In A Bottomless Grave

In 2016 Witch Vomit burst onto the scene with one of the most impressive death metal debut albums in recent years. Now they are back with their first release since 2017's Poisoned Blood EP. Buried Deep In A Bottomless Grave is an absolute monster of a death metal record. Witch Vomit crack skulls all across the spectrum on this one consistently impressive with the high powered delivery of their particular brand of death metal slaughter. This is bestial and brutal death metal at its finest, and Witch Vomit know it.

What strikes me about these Portland natives is that their approach is remarkably articulate for a band this heavy. Normally when you have groups drowning you in crushing riffs the production suffers. However here Witch Vomit prove that you can have your cake and eat it. Buried Deep In A Bottomless Grave is in this way sort of reminiscent of early Nails in as much as the band is able to take their brutarian stomp and develop it into something even crueler by adding well merited frills. The riffs can turn on a dime and the blasting magic of a track like Dead Veins is relentlessly addictive. This is what modern death metal is all about.

Buried Deep In A Bottomless Grave frequently borders on the terrifying. This is an album that encourages the listener to dig deeper and stare into the void. Witch Vomit are truly skilled death metal devastators. Balancing high speed riffs with punishing melodies the band at their finest almost feels like a twisted evolution of Carcass. Embracing bombast but doing so with a punk sneer means that Witch Vomit are able to stand as their own creation, over the top, energetic and eager to once more go for the throat.
