King Gorm - S/T

There aren't a ton of records that claim to worship classic rock that are actually good. Most of the time you just get bland rehashings of Black Sabbath through the lens of a devastatingly drunk High On Fire jam session. King Gorm however manage to distill a variety of exciting elements, ranging from Rush and King Crimson to Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young by way of Blue Oyster Cult. In other worlds, King Gorm have the talent to sit among the greats and do something truly special and endlessly interesting.

The inherent bombast of this record is very much intentional. The record tells epic and bardic tales, transcending time and space to capture the imagination of the listener. King Gorm have gone far above and beyond here to unleash something that fascinates. The epic journey of a song like 'The Witch Of Irondale' is something that only the truly talented can pull off. Meanwhile the dark almost Sabbathian magic of 'Slaughter Of The King' proves that King Gorm can hang with all the heavier bands too. It's hard not to get lost in the magic of what unfolds here, as the band only seem to grow and embrace bold new heights.

It makes sense that this project might come from the mind behind Old Man Wizard. There are clear overtones of bands like Ghost but also a sense of power metal magic. This is a fun record that any fan of classic rock is really going to find something to sink their teeth into. It's rare that I find an album that is quite as fun as this one and which seems to so eagerly leap from peak to peak. King Gorm are far too much fun to listen too and their deep passion behind this music is exciting, clearminded and over the top.
