Noctu - Gelidae Mortis Imago

Man it's been a while since I've dug into a funeral doom record that really 'got it'. However Noctu, with their new offering, Gelidae Mortis Imago create weird and powerful funeral doom that can't help but to fascinate. On this record that band conjure up wonderfully bleak sounds and twisted ideas to make for a masterpiece. Fusing dungeon synth with more traditional funeral doom ideas, the group trudges along at a crawl, with three tracks, non under fifteen minutes long and three interludes It makes for a record you can really get lost in.

There is a strange poetry behind Gelidae Mortis Imago. The transcendent power behind tracks like 'Isolato Da Un Mondo Senza Speranza' speaks to what these Italians are conjuring up. The esoteric approach and grandiose sounds of this record are majestic. While the production at times is lacking and the sludgy pace can sometimes feel like a slog, Noctu know exactly what they are doing. The sort of ethereal and weird majesty of their conjurations on tracks like Lucida Oscurità Senzienteare fascinating to take part in. They speak to a twisted and unholy reality that is going to keep funeral doom freaks obsessed.

It's rare these days to find funeral doom that is so synth driven. Gelidae Mortis Imago seems to revel in this aspect. They develop Lovecraftian worlds of sound that are evil and majestic. Snarling their way through a trip into hell. Meanwhile the anthemic and wonderfully put together guitars provide a sense of the triumphant through it all.  Undeniably introspective and alienating to all but the most dedicated of fans, Gelidae Mortis Imago is a funeral doom record that will keep the devout masses entranced.
