Scolopendra are a horror inspired Italian death metal band. Their music is wonderfully evil, twisted and gurgling. The way that they blast forward recklessly throughout their debut LP, Those Of The Catacombs, only serves to help make them a one of a kind force in the world of underground metal. This is a primitive and destructive record. It's another gem in the crown of the legendary Nuclear War Now! too. With this debut Scolopendra prove that they are a veritable force to be reckoned with in the Italian death metal scene.
Those Of The Catacombs delights with its primeval crunch. The way the band lurch forward, delivering blow after blow on a track like 'Tormented Dying Nuns' is thrilling. There is a sort of balls out assault here that drags you by the hair and beats you into the dirt. The manic riffing of a track like 'Zombies Feasting' only serves to further the bleak magic of this band. It means that Those Of The Catacombs come out with a record that is not only powerful, but also a wonderful interpretation of the horror movies of which they are so obsessed. It's an album that doesn't break any boundaries, but is fun as hell to listen too.
This is a wonderfully fierce record. It's an album that goes for the throat and that is obsessed with gore, madness and mayhem. Those Of The Catacombs in some ways evokes the twisted brutal magic of the first wave of death metal, when it was just kids crafting music inspired by the movies they liked. This is a bit of a throwback to that but simultaneously nested within the grand tradition of Italian metal bands inspired by horror films. Together it makes for a really fun listen that will creep you out and crack your skull.
