Audn - Vökudraumsins fangi

This is an absolutely masterful one. After a decade of toil and strife, the Icelandic black metal masters Audn are back with what is easily their best record to date. Vökudraumsins fangi is positively masterful in its execution. This is a record that stands a head and shoulders above the rest, impressing listeners with the breadth of its compositions and the deep emotional depths that it so eagerly explores. This is what black metal was meant to be about and it's such a delight to get to really burrow into the myriad layers of madness that they've documented here.

There is something monumentally exciting about some of the sounds Audn have created here. Their music is sonically very much in line with many ideas from the later second wave of black metal stuff. That being said there is a distinctly Icelandic twist coupled with all sorts of modern day frills that mesmerize and impress. It's hard not to be thrilled, for instance with the raw bombast of a track like 'Drepsott.' There is a level of majesty and magic that helps to make this a really interesting and dynamic listen. Vökudraumsins fangi continues to show how impressive these cats are, with twisted screams countermanded by sorrowful bellows into the void.

Vökudraumsins fangi is an absolute stunner. This is an album that has a ton of layers and acts as a triumphant step forward for the band. The masterful production (Which especially shines on tracks like 'Naedir Um' really helps to cement Audn's place in the Icelandic black metal canon. This is a band who can speak to the soul and continue to drive towards new heights in interesting and exciting ways. The band have found their voice in an exciting way here and I am very interested to see where their demonic ministrations take them next!
