Man - you've got to love Greek black metal. Especially when it's delivered by a pair of unflinching devotees to the scene in a truly devastating and passionate way as it is with Zaratus. Their new record, In The Days Of Whore is a fitting testament to the power of hellenic black metal and a thrilling offering that continually sees the band jump from peak to peak. There is a very real passion and power behind what Zaratus do here that helps to make them a one of a kind force in the present day landscape of the genre.
It's a delight to really get lost in the blazing rhythms and nightmarish vocals that define this record. Zaratus are clearly enamored with the titans of Greek black metal, bands like Varathron and Rotting Christ. Still, they build on this classic palate with some unexpected twists and turns. In particular the use of traditional instruments and sounds on the album closer, the nearly nine minute epic, "Zoroastrian Priests" is fascinating. The bands inherent bombast bleeds out all over the record. Showcasing just how talented the band are as songwriters and leaving the faint of heart weak at the knees. It's really important stuff.
Zaratus nicely capture the magic of classic Greek black metal on In The Days Of Whore proving a deep familiarity with the scene and once more contributing to one of black metals most vaunted communities in a meaningful way. Listening as this band continues to develop their wonderfully blasphemous sound and go for the throat is going to be a delight. They understand this music on a fundamental level and are more than eager to rip your throat out. Embrace the blasphemies, witness the fall of empires, listen to Zaratus.
