It's hard to believe that it's been eight years since Carcass proved once more that they are the best to ever do it with Surgical Steel. Now they are back with a blistering new offering - Torn Arteries. This record is high powered and devastating - exactly what you would expect from the original blood thirsty flesh manglers. There is a level of hate that they push on this record that is delightful and reminds listeners exactly what makes this band so special. While this is no Surgical Steel this is still an excellent goddamn album.
As with Surgical Steel Carcass attempt to showcase every side of their sound on Torn Arteries. Yes there are grindy moments but there are also progressive elements, and even passages that border on hard rock. It's exactly the sort of thing that speaks to the ferocious and relentlessly accurate playing of on of England's most vaunted bands. It's hard not to be charmed by their swagger and the way they stomp out onto the stage with a clear lust for blood. This is death metal executed at the highest level, silly puns and all. Once more Carcass has managed to tap into all the twisted elements that make them great and deliver.
Torn Arteries was inherently never going to be as good or as surprising as Surgical Steel. That record was just too much of a monster. Nevertheless - I think that Carcass fans new and old are going to find a lot to love on this album. It's a record that speaks to the manic magic of the genre and encourages listeners to really dig in across multiple listens. All the Carcass-y goodness that you know and love is still here with more beside. When you dive into this album you are feasting on the next part of an immortal underground legacy.
