Luminous Vault have long been darlings of the Brooklyn black metal underground, but without a full length to their name it felt the bands full potential had not been reached. Now we have the debut LP from these industrial black masters and it's proof that all their early potential, and the five year wait for this record, has been more than worth it. This is daring and interesting black metal that benefits from some truly top tier production and puts Luminous Vault in a league of their own, with larger than life imagery and a sense of crippling volume.
What sets Luminous Vault apart is their willingness to bring in electronic music into their approach. Not only that but they emulate the "Machine rhythm" tactics of their musical forbears like Godflesh and Blut Aus Nord. The end result is a record that is dynamic and exciting, full of sounds that don't often find a place to be built upon in black metal. Tremolo picked guitars sit on top of all manner of electronic drum sounds and its entrancing to really let yourself get lost in the dynamic assault of what Luminous Vault have really put together here. It's mesmerizing to hear Luminous Vault executing at such a high level with such clarity of vision.
Animate The Emptiness is an absolute stunner of a record and it's a delight to really let yourself get lost in the darkness of what has been conjured up here. The electronic sounds are often unexpected and the performances top notch. Luminous Vault finds interesting ways to breathe new life in black metal without sounding contrived and staying true to the spirit of the genre. Bombastic and powerful, Luminous Vault have managed to set themselves apart on Animate The Emptiness and I think will be drawing listeners ever deeper in the near future.
