The Canadian masters are back! Here with their sixth album, the third of their current tetralogy, The Suns of Perdition, Chapter III: The Astral Drain, Panzerfaust are once more proving that they are among the masters of Canadian black metal. This new record is sprawling and powerful, a transcendent gaze into the void and one that builds on so many of the thrilling elements that have dominated the psyche of previous offerings from these underground masters. Few bands understand black metal the way Panzerfaust do, and it is truly fascinating to hear unfold.
The first thing that struck me about this record was how much more Neurosis influenced it felt. While Panzerfaust has historically shown an ability to do a variety of styles of black metal this record feels distinctly moodier and more vast in scope. The long form songs are inspiring and fascinating, exactly the sorts of things you could find yourself falling completely in love with. There is a breadth to the vision behind the music and a passion behind the execution that speaks to Panzerfaust's ever elevated ability as creators. It's a delight to let yourself get really immersed in their vision and experience the power of Canadian darkness in a whole new way. The band has pushed themselves to bold new heights and it's thrilling to experience.
The Suns of Perdition, Chapter III: The Astral Drain is a stunner any way you slice it, it's a record that sees a long established band pushing their sound to dizzying new heights. It's a record that forces you to acknowledge the triumph of Canadian black metal. Panzerfaust have thrilled me once more on this offering and getting immersed in their unique brand of madness and dancing with it is a delight. Turn this one all the way up when it drops on July 22nd and prepare yourself to experience the band as you never have before.
