Well this is a crusher. Death And The Twilight Hours is an absolute monster of a record and the blood spilling black metal madness that defines their distinctly Southwestern breed of auditory torment. This is a record that is deeply in love with classic black metal, evoking eeriness and reminding listeners that they need to be gasping for air wherever they can. The squirrely playing and broad production makes for a truly fascinating sound and consistently captures the imagination with ever heavier remonstrations to a fallen world.
It's rare to find black metal that is this technical, but Predatory Light find a way to lean into their flourishes. From the proggy moments to the downright twisted, they have carved their own path on this offering and getting lost in the murk is entrancing. Death And The Twilight Hours consistently impresses with the intensity of its assault. The pummeling drums in particular sound great, it's really a delight to hear them roll out and unleash gorgeous metal fury upon listeners. There is a very real and bizarrely twisted sense of sonic poetry that helps to make this offering so compelling and getting lost in the sound worlds of a track like "To Plead Like Angels" is a delight.
Predatory Light have done something very difficult to do in the world of black metal, they have crafted a sound that is wholly their own whilst staying very much in a classic black metal framework. Death And The Twilight Hours is a unique and powerful listen, a record that I think is going to continually entrance fans of the underground and keep them coming back for more. This is a devilish and exciting offering, I'm deeply curious to see where Predatory Light's unique take on the genre ends up taking them next.
