Acephalix - Theothanatology

Acephalix are back, and it is good. Their new album Theothanatology explores the bands uniquely crusty take on death metal with lyrics delving into the idea that God is dead. The gristly and twisted sound that the band has conjured up over the last fifteen years has only become more potent with time and this new offering sees them executing on their blasphemous vision at a level that they may have only dreamed of in the past. There is a wonderfully bleak magic to the assault that Acephalix lay down on the senses, and their vision remains as crushing as ever. 

One of the things that really struck me about this record was the quality of the production. Tracks like "Postmortem Punishment" manage to achieve that nearly impossible task of both sounding really goddamn good, but maintaining a certain death metal basement show feel. The end result is a record that despite its polish stays true to the bands crust punk origins and allows listeners to really immerse themselves in the twisted darkness of what Acephalix have been crafting for years now. What's also clear from the first is how long went into writing this record. The complexity of the riffs and composition is a head and shoulders above anything the band has done before. 

Theothanatology is a thrilling offering to say the least and one that I think will keep devoted fans eagerly coming back for more. This is death metal done right, with a lust for blood and a desire to keep you gasping for air. The punk roots shine through as do the thoughtful lyrics. This is another potent step forward for what has long been one of the most exciting bands in the underground. Delve into the glorious abomination and let yourself experience the darkness once more. Acephalix are back for the first time in five years and it is terrifyingly good.
