Noctem - Credo Certe Ne Cras

Noctem have been kicking around the black metal scene for a while now, but this latest offering feels like a significant step forward for the band. The bands melodic and powerful take on black metal is thrilling and speaks to the Spaniards deeper songwriting ability. On this album the band once more prove that they are very aware of their own strengths and lean into them, with bombastic offerings that remain wicked and terrifying in their scope. Noctem has gone above and beyond with Credo Certe Ne Cras in order to leave listeners in awe. '

Credo Certe Ne Cras impresses because of the breadth of the compositions. Tracks like "The Pale Moon Rite" stay very much in the classic black metal vein whilst showing just how good Noctem have become. (The giant "Huah!" that kicks off the song only adds to the magic.) The end result is a record with a sort of throbbing evil behind it, that plays with dynamics and understands the core of the genre in a fundamental way. Noctem have continually left me in awe as they piece together the wonderfully twisted vision behind the band and Credo Certe Ne Cras feels like their most definitive statement of intent yet. An offering that is wholly impossible to ignore.

The Spanish black metal scene has long been dramatically underrated. It feels like this record might be a turning point for both that scene and this band, an indicator of all that is to come. Noctem are a band who understand their inherent drama and the strange beauty that this music can have. Credo Certe Ne Cras is a masterful offering done by a band who clearly have a deep understanding and vision behind their take on black metal. Letting yourself get lost in this abyss is a treat, and one that requires multiple listens to really grasp. Dig in.
