Ciemra - The Tread Of Darkness

If you had told me today that I'd hear a fairly traditional black metal record that also featured a full on Pink Floyd style solo I'm not sure I would have believed you. Yet such is the power of Ciemra and their new record The Tread Of Darkness. This is a really special offering and one that I think brings a surprisingly fresh vision to classic melodic black metal sounds. The end result is an album that is vibrant and twisted, a demented look into a world of hate and full of sorrowful, multi layered compositions that drag you to the crypt.

The Tread Of Darkness really impresses with the sheer quality of the compositions and the overarching vision they bring to the table. Ciemra don't lose themselves in the corny side of the genre nor do they seem like try hards. Instead The Tread Of Darkness feels like a wonderfully bleak, unapologetic and often blasphemous offering of black metal darkness. The percussive assault of the vocals and the quality of the guitar tone alone is enough to really draw you into the sounds. There is so much more to The Tread Of Darkness than that though. As you journey through these soundscapes you can practically see the dark Belarusian forest crawling up on you to haunt your nightmares.

Ciemra are a really interesting force, and to be honest I haven't listened to much work from the Belarusian scene, so this is a potent introduction. The Tread Of Darkness is a crusher any way you slice it, and Ciemra understand the wonderful horror that this kind of music can bring to the table. Letting yourself get lost in this vision of blasphemy is a delight. This is a band who understand some of the more twisted motives behind these sounds and who execute on them with aplomb. If you're looking to get lost in the madness, search no further.
