Unfelled is a truly impressive atmospheric black metal band featuring members of Woods of Desolation (D. is in fact that mastermind of Unfelled) as well as Austere and Drudkh. Their new album, and debut full length, Pall Of Endless Perdition is a thriller, a crushing black metal offering that inspires listeners with triumphant layers of darkness and an approach that will leave listeners in awe of the larger than life compositions that they have brought to the table and consistently executed upon with this monster of an album.
Pall Of Endless Perdition impresses because of the breadth of the compositions and quality of the production. It's black metal done with a distinct sense of the misery of the genre and the burning fire that keeps so much of this thing alive. This is a band who understand the wonderfully bleak and sorrowful nature of this music and their execution on these ideas is thrilling. Pall Of Endless Perdition builds on the years of demos that preceded it. The end result is a record that is sorrowful but stripped back, not resting on the melodies of Woods of Desolation, but instead forcing listeners to confront the darker sides of these compositions.
This is an album like few otghers to come out this year. This is already shaping up to be a landmark year for black metal, and Unfelled are adding to that. It's a daring move to release a project like this so shortly after unleashing new music from Woods of Desolation in the world, but I think for devout fans of the underground, this is exactly what you want from these Australian black metal masters. Unfelled are a one of a kind force in the underground and it's hard not to be charmed by the darkness that they so easily invoke.
