Ondfodt - Det Österbottniska Mörkret

Finnish black metal has long held a special place in my heart. The countries specific take on the genre with its blasting assault and unrelenting blasphemies is addictive and it speaks to a sound that has resonated with generations of fans. Ondfodt add to this legacy of misery with Det Österbottniska Mörkret a violent little offering on the wonderful Black Lion Records. This record shines with its blasting drums and barrage of hyper speed black metal riffs, exactly the sort of thing that a devotee of the underground is searching for as they wander across the Finnish wastes.

It's hard not to be impressed with the intensity of what Ondfodt are delivering here. Det Österbottniska Mörkret is a release that taps into many of the traditional tropes of the genre and these tracks paint unrelenting monochromatic images of snow blasted landscapes and foreboding futures. There is something strangely anthemic about what the band does, with tracks like "Hostfruktan" rising above the normal gnashing of teeth and pointing at a wonderfully bleak sound that is going to fascinate legions of listeners. Ondfodt understand the blistering power of black metal and execute on it with aplomb, time and time again.

Ondfodt are masters of the underground and their sound, while not reinventing the steel, is one that really speaks to a certain subsection of fan, which happens to include yours truly. Their sound is powerful and addictive, a masterclass in Finnish black metal, nodding to their influences and proving their desire to go beyond. Det Österbottniska Mörkret is a crusher, and one that you're going to find in record collections of metal nerds across the world. If you're looking for modern Finnish black metal brilliance, search no more, this is for you.
