Helleruin - Devils, Death and Dark Arts

Helleruin are an inimitable force emerging from the fiery black metal scene of the Netherlands - a country that seems to be cranking out endless amounts of excellent black metal these days. Their upcoming full length, Devils, Death And Dark Arts is the perfect ministration of all that they have done with its blazing fury and transcendent heaviness. Helleruin draws listeners deep into the darkness and forces them to acknowledge their own suffering whilst blazing a path in flame and steel. Suffice it to say it's black metal done right.

While Helleruin primarily trade in bombastic, monochromatic frostbitten riffs this is a surprisingly deep record. Acoustic breaks and surprisingly tasteful synth lines interweave with the music in order to put Helleruin very much in a league of their own. It's hard not to be impressed with the quality of the compositions and the level of the production. As much as this is a pro sounding record, the mix knows when to give things just enough of a DIY flavor, as they do on the toms so that things remain just a touch more rough and ready than one might expect. Helleruin clearly have delved into the breadth of black metal history and found ways to express their misery and blasphemy in ways that line up with our triumphant shared canon.

Devils, Death And Dark Arts is a testimony to the power of the black metal scene in the Netherlands today. It's transcendent, evil and clear in its place in the grand history of the genre we love. It's hard not to be charmed by the approach that Helleruin bring to the table here and the bands ability to conjure updevilishly frozen riffs at a whim. for those of us looking for another release that ties into the grand old style and which will fuel blazes in the northern sky for years to come one need look no further than this grand sorcery.
