Deitus - Irreversible

Anytime you get a black metal record from Candlelight you know you're in for something special. Deitus is the latest from this quasi-mythic pantheon, and their new album, Irreversible is a veritable monster of black metal wizardry. The layers of emotion and depths of these compositions makes for addictive listening and the bands ability to tie themselves into classic black metal tropes is certain to resonate with fans of the underground. Deitus understand the power of all that is underground and it's hard not to be enamored with the abyss that they lay out before us.

I think what impresses me the most about Deitus is the breadth of their sound. While some tracks like "Straight For Your Throat" are straight ahead black metal, replete with blast beats and tremolo picking, others such as "Voyeur" go in a totally different, almost Chelsea Wolfe-esque direction. Nevertheless Irreversible manages to stay pretty consistent throughout and show listeners just how special the band is time and time again. It's a record that finds new ways to thrill no matter how deep you dig. It's an immaculate and deep effort that shows the five year gap we had since the last record was most certainly worth the wait.

Deitus soar on Irreversible, even as they seem to plumb to new depths of despair. This album shows the diversity of their sound and talent and will see the band achieving great new things. It's such a clear step forward from the past material, but the through line is clear. Deitus have found new layers of themselves with this offering and getting immersed into the darkness of what they present is a delight. This is black metal done right, aware of its past and staring grimly into the future. What more could you want from an album?

Pre-order the album!
