It's insane to think that Vastum are five albums deep at this point but here we are. The bands uniquely bestial and devastating sound has continued to be honed over the past four years since their last offering. Inward To Gethsemane is an absolute crusher, a devilish and terrifying release that seems to only get more ominous with each passing spin. It's death metal done right, with a sense of evil and horror that seems to only make it all the more compelling with time. If you're looking to delve into new worlds of death metal dread, this is what you should be looking for.
Vastum's lineup remains a veritable whose who of the Bay Area death metal scene, once more bringing forth members of Necrot, Acephalix, Ulthar and many more to round out a lineup that has a fundamental understanding of what death metal is supposed to be about. Inward To Gethsemane touches on many of the classic elements that made Vastum so compelling in the first place and builds on them elegantly. While the band is certainly not reinventing themselves on this record, it's clear that a lot of work went into this album and that Vastum only get better with age. They know what it means to crack skulls and leave listeners in awe.
Inward To Gethsemane is introverted, heavy and undeniable, all the things that have helped to make Vastum such an engaging project for so long. They understand the crushing power of the underground and it's hard not to be enamored with the vision they consistently bring to the table on this release. It's devilish, it's loud and it's completely unforgiving. Don't come to Vastum record expecting easy listening, instead prepare for devastation and surprising, experimental explorations that leave listeners agog at what they've experienced.
