Obsidian Tongue - The Stone Heart

Dense, transcendent and surprisingly poetic, Obsidian Tongue are a one of a kind force in the underground, whose new album The Stone Heart is a stirring and emotional offering that speaks to the depth of what the band has created over the last 15 years. For those in the know, Obsidian Tongue has been one of the most interesting atmospheric black metal bands in the US scene in recent years, featuring  Brendan Hayter (Shabti, Thrawsunblat, Obsequiae-live) and Ray Capizzo (Falls Of Rauros, Shabti, Panopticon-live).

The Stone Heart is only three songs, but it represents Obsidian Tongue's first new music in four years, and it leaves me hungry for more. The band has found a way to transcend and create something elegant, poetic and truly exciting. It's an emotional and transcendent release and one that feels much more epic than its twenty minute run time might initially suggest. Obsidian Tongue understand what it takes to create epic and deeply engaging music, and The Stone Heart suggests that they've only gotten better with time. What more could one want from black metal poetry?
