Holy Shire is an exciting new prog band, a group who craft epic soundscapes and songs that capture the eternal magic of the genre. Yet more than this, they are a group dedicated to the high flying spirit of true fantasy, as well as Norse myths. This makes for an album that not only is interesting to listen too, but also incredibly fun, Holy Shire get the magic of what they are doing and this allows them to really rise high, lords of a genre that is only growing. Their debut album Midgard was hotly anticipated, and this is everything we could have wanted from it.
One of the most important things about this album is the use of male and female vocals. This helps to create a very layered and elaborate sound. This eventually pans out to craft a release that captures the mind in a fresh and innovative way. There are eight musicians credited on this record, and this means that there are a variety of exciting instrumentations to be had here. One of my favorites is the use of flute parts which add a rather folky feel at some points, while also giving a classical vibe to some of the more epic compositions use it to create incredible and fertile soundscapes. Let's just say, whoever arranged the parts on this record is a musical genius, an artist of the highest caliber.
This is an album that you can get lost in, with a variety of twists and turns that boggle the mind and grapples with the spirit. Bombastic and exciting Midgard tells exciting and multi layered stories that provoke the imagination. It's great to once more have a prog band who really indulge in the fun fantasy stories that so much of the genre is based off of. Turn off the lights and turn on the speakers, this album takes many a listen ro fully grasp and will keep you engaged for hours on end. One of the most promising prog debuts of 2014, Midgard can only impress.
